A Beginner's Guide to Flag Semaphore
Long before radios were small enough to carry aboard every ship, sailors needed a way to pass a message across open water in plain sight of anyone with a telescope. Flag semaphore — spelling out letters with two hand-held flags held in fixed arm positions — was one of the answers, and it is still taught today, from naval training to scouting.
The idea behind it
Semaphore works because the human body is a surprisingly good signalling device once you fix a small vocabulary of positions. A signaller holds one flag in each hand and moves both arms to a specific pair of positions for each letter. Read from a distance, against open sky or water, the silhouette is unmistakable in a way that handwriting or speech never could be.
Where the hand-flag alphabet came from
Flag semaphore did not appear out of nowhere. It grew out of an earlier idea — the fixed-position shutter and arm telegraphs devised by Home Riggs Popham and later improved by Charles Pasley, mechanical semaphore towers that relayed messages over land by moving large arms into different angles, station to station, well before any electric telegraph existed. Those towers worked well on a hilltop but were obviously impossible to bolt onto a moving ship, so navies adapted the same underlying idea — a message encoded purely as a set of fixed positions — into a portable, two-flag version a person could carry and operate by hand. That handheld version is generally dated to 1866, and it caught on quickly for the reason mechanical semaphore never could at sea: no installation, no moving parts to maintain in salt air, and a signaller who could relocate anywhere on deck with a clear sightline.
Seven positions per arm
Each arm can take one of seven named positions: up (straight overhead), high (a raised diagonal), out (held straight out to the side), low (a lowered diagonal), down (by the side), and two across positions, where the arm swings in front of the body to the opposite side’s high or low diagonal. Every one of the 26 letters is a specific, fixed pairing of a left-arm and a right-arm position, and the pairings are the same regardless of who is signalling or being read — there is no personal style to it, which is exactly the point.
Numbers get a shortcut, not a new alphabet
Rather than learning a second set of positions for digits, semaphore borrows the positions for the first ten letters. A numeral sign is signalled first, telling the reader “what follows is a number, not a letter,” and then the digits 1 through 9 and 0 reuse the positions for A through I and K, in that order. Once the reader sees another letter’s position or a clear pause, they know the numeral run has ended. Reading a message in practice
A signaller moves from one letter’s position directly into the next, holding each just long enough to be read clearly, with a short pause — both arms lowered — marking the gap between words. There is no punctuation in the strict sense; longer pauses and context do the work that a comma or period would in writing. Reading semaphore is a skill that improves quickly with practice: most learners start by reading letter-by-letter and slowly, then begin recognising short common words as a single shape rather than a sequence of individual positions, the same way a fluent reader stops sounding out letters on a printed page.
The letter pairs that trip up beginners
A handful of letters are easy to mix up early on, simply because their positions are close mirror images of each other. “N” is both arms held low, which a tired signaller can start to blur with “A” (down and low) or “G” (low and down) if the arms droop even slightly out of position. The two “across” positions cause a similar problem: because the arm swings fully in front of the body, it is easy to let it drift a little short or a little far, turning a crisp “O” into something that reads ambiguously between two letters. The fix in every case is the same — hold each position fully extended and pause distinctly before moving to the next, rather than letting positions blur together in a hurry to go faster. Speed comes later; accuracy has to come first, or the whole message becomes guesswork for whoever is reading it.
Semaphore next to Morse code
Sailors of the same era were often taught both semaphore and Morse code, and it is worth being clear about how differently the two work. Morse encodes letters as short and long pulses of sound or light — it needs a lamp, a buzzer, or a radio key, but it works day or night and does not require the sender and reader to see each other’s full body. Semaphore encodes letters as static visual positions and needs no equipment beyond two flags (or, in a pinch, nothing at all), but it depends on daylight and an unobstructed line of sight to a signaller’s whole upper body. The two were, and still are, complementary rather than competing systems: a ship might reach for a signal lamp after dark and semaphore flags in daylight, choosing whichever tool suits the visibility and distance at hand.
Why the flags themselves look the way they do
Semaphore flags are small and deliberately simple — usually a bold, high-contrast pattern such as a diagonal split of red and yellow or red and orange, mounted on a short handstaff. The point of the pattern is purely to make the flag’s outline and orientation obvious at a distance, against every background a signaller might realistically stand in front of: open sky, grey sea, a cluttered dockside. Because the whole system is built on the position of the arms rather than any detail printed on the flag, the flags themselves carry no letters, numbers, or symbols of their own — swap in a plain solid color and the alphabet still works exactly the same way, which is also why semaphore can be signalled bare-handed, or with a lit wand at night, once a reader already knows the position table.
Worked example: spelling out “FLAG”
Seeing four letters signalled in sequence makes the system click faster than any description of positions in the abstract. Spelling “FLAG” runs through the standard alphabet like this: F is left arm out to the side, right arm down. L is left arm raised to the high diagonal, right arm lowered to the low diagonal. A is left arm down, right arm at the low diagonal. G is left arm at the low diagonal, right arm down. Learning to send it yourself
The fastest way to learn semaphore is to drill the alphabet in small chunks rather than trying to memorise all 26 letters at once. A few tips that make the learning curve gentler:
- Start with your own name and a handful of common short words. Motivation holds up better when you are spelling something meaningful rather than drilling A, B, C in order.
- Practice in front of a mirror. It is the fastest way to notice whether your “high” position is drifting toward “up,” a common beginner mistake.
- Learn the across positions last. They cover fewer letters and are easiest to add once the five natural positions per arm are solid.
- Read before you send. Watching someone else signal, even in a video, trains your eye to recognise positions quickly — a skill that transfers directly to sending once your arms catch up with your eyes.
- Drill the confusable pairs deliberately. Once the alphabet feels comfortable, spend extra time specifically on the letters covered above — they are disproportionately responsible for real-world misreads.
Where it still matters today
Radio and satellite communication have replaced semaphore for almost all day-to-day maritime signalling, but it has not disappeared. It remains part of standard sea scout and naval cadet training worldwide, and it is still used operationally during underway replenishment — the close-quarters maneuver where two ships transfer fuel or supplies while under way — where the noise and vibration make voice radio unreliable at short range.
