Hoist vs. Fly: The Vocabulary Every Flag Maker Uses
Every trade has a vocabulary that sounds like jargon until you need it, and flag making is no exception. Once you know a handful of terms, you can describe any flag’s layout precisely, in the same language a manufacturer, a vexillologist, or a flag-code guide would use.
Hoist and fly: the two edges that matter
The hoist is the edge of a flag that attaches to the pole, and by extension the term also describes the flag’s vertical dimension when it hangs from a horizontal staff. The fly is the opposite edge — the one that streams free in the wind — and it doubles as the name for the flag’s horizontal length. Put a number on each and you get a flag’s ratio, written hoist:fly, such as 2:3 or 1:2. The fly edge is also the one that frays first, since it takes the most punishment from wind and flapping, which is one reason it gets its own reinforcement details, covered further down.
The field and its regions
The field is the flag’s background — the main expanse of color a charge or emblem sits on. Flag and heraldry vocabulary carves the field into named regions using the same system a shield uses: the canton is a rectangular block in the upper hoist-side corner (the star field on the flag of the United States is a canton), the chief is a horizontal band across the top, and the base is the mirroring band across the bottom. A diagonal band running corner to corner is a bend, and terms like dexter (the viewer’s left, since heraldry is described from the bearer’s point of view) and sinister (the viewer’s right) specify which side a detail sits on. A design element sitting on the field — a star, an animal, a tool, a geometric shape — is a charge, and the whole arrangement of field plus charges is sometimes called the device.
Obverse and reverse
A flag has two faces, and they are not always identical. The obverse is the side normally shown or photographed — conventionally the side seen when the hoist is on the viewer’s left. The reverse is the other face. Some flags are fully reversible, appearing identical (or mirror-image identical) on both sides; others carry a design that only reads correctly from one face, which is one reason certain flags are sewn rather than simply printed through the fabric. A flag sewn so that both faces show a correctly oriented design (rather than one being a mirror image of the other) needs twice the fabric and twice the stitching, which is part of why fully double-sided construction is reserved for higher-end or ceremonial flags rather than everyday outdoor ones.
Ordinaries: the basic shapes that divide a field
Heraldry and flag design share a small set of geometric shapes for splitting a field, called ordinaries. A pale is a vertical band down the center; a fess is a horizontal band across the middle; a bend, as above, runs diagonally corner to corner. A chevron is an inverted-V shape, and a saltire is a full X spanning the field corner to corner — the diagonal counterpart to a plain cross. Combine two or more ordinaries and you get compound layouts: a field split into quarters by both a pale and a fess at once is described as quarterly, while a field divided into more than four triangular wedges radiating from the center is gyronny. None of these words describe color or meaning — only geometry — which is exactly why they are useful: they let two people who have never seen a specific flag agree on its structure from a written description alone.
Fimbriation: a border that solves a contrast problem
Fimbriation is a narrow border of one tincture run along the edge of a charge or a dividing line, most often used to separate two colors (or two metals) that would otherwise sit directly against each other and blur together, or that would break the heraldic rule of tincture if placed edge to edge. A blue field and a red charge might not read cleanly at a distance without a thin white or gold fimbriation line tracing the boundary between them; the border adds definition without changing either color’s area meaningfully. It is a small trick, but it shows up constantly once you know to look for it, anywhere a flag places two saturated colors directly against one another.
The hardware and construction terms
A finished flag has more going on at the hoist edge than the bare fabric. The header (sometimes called the heading) is a reinforced strip of canvas or twill sewn along the hoist edge to take the strain of grommets and hardware without tearing. A grommet is the metal-ringed hole punched through the header that a rope or clip passes through, and the halyard is that rope itself — the line used to raise and lower the flag on its pole. On a flag meant to fly from a car window or a hand-held staff instead, you will instead find a sleeve, a fabric tube that slides directly over a pole rather than relying on grommets at all. Where the hoist edge is turned over and stitched down to stop it from unraveling, that seam is called tabling.
The fly edge gets its own vocabulary too. A roach is a shallow concave curve cut into the fly edge instead of leaving it a straight vertical line — a detail seen on many naval ensigns, partly decorative and partly practical, since the curved edge sheds a small amount of the fraying stress a straight edge would concentrate at the corners. A flag whose fly edge is cut into a deep V or fork instead is swallow-tailed, a shape common on pennants, guidons, and command flags precisely because it reads as visually distinct from an ordinary rectangular flag even in silhouette.
Flags with a job title: ensign, jack, standard, guidon, gonfalon
Not every flag-shaped object is simply “a flag” — vexillology has specific names for flags defined by where and how they are flown, independent of their design. An ensign is a flag flown at the stern of a ship (or the equivalent position ashore) to show its registration or affiliation. A jack is a smaller flag flown from a short staff at the bow, historically a secondary marker distinct from the ensign at the stern. A standard is a large ceremonial flag, historically associated with a specific noble house, military unit, or head of state rather than a nation as a whole. A guidon is a small flag, often swallow-tailed, carried by a military unit as a rallying and identification marker. A gonfalon is a flag hung from a horizontal crossbar rather than run up a halyard, so it drapes downward rather than streaming sideways — a form long associated with civic and ecclesiastical processions. Knowing these terms lets you describe a flag’s function, not just its pattern, which matters when a design looks identical to an ordinary flag but is flown and used completely differently.
Bunting, pennants, and other cousins
Not everything that flies from a rope is a flag in the strict sense. Bunting refers to the light, loosely woven fabric traditionally used to make flags and festive decorations, and by extension to strings of small flags or triangular pieces hung for decoration rather than as a symbol. A pennant is a long, tapering flag, usually triangular or swallow-tailed, historically flown by ships and now equally at home on a sports team’s wall. A windsock, familiar from any small airfield, is a cousin by function rather than form — a fabric cone that shows wind direction and speed rather than carrying a symbol at all.
Reading a spec sheet with this vocabulary
Put several of these terms together and a manufacturer’s spec sheet stops looking like a foreign language: “2:3 ratio, canton in the upper hoist corner, roach cut into the fly edge, double-sewn header with brass grommets” is a complete, unambiguous description of a physical object, with no photo required. That precision is also the foundation of a construction sheet — the technical drawing, usually built on a numbered unit grid, that fixes exactly where every charge and dividing line sits relative to the hoist and fly. Why the vocabulary earns its keep
None of this is trivia for its own sake.
