Sizing a Flag for Your Flagpole: Seven Worked Examples
Our guide to choosing the right flag size for your flagpole covers the quarter-to-third rule and why the range exists. This one skips straight to the numbers: seven real pole-and-ratio combinations, run through our own Flag Size for Pole Height Calculator, including a couple of rounding results that are not quite what you would guess at a glance.
Why standard sizes exist at all
Before the worked examples, it is worth being clear about why “nearest standard size” is even a step in the calculation, rather than simply cutting a flag to whatever figure the math produces. Flags are manufactured in batches at a fixed set of common sizes because doing so keeps cutting patterns, hemming jigs, and grommet spacing standardized across a production run — a custom one-off size means custom tooling, which costs far more per flag than picking the closest size already in production. The gap between a calculated ideal and the nearest standard size is also, in practice, rarely large enough to notice by eye once the flag is flying, which is exactly why manufacturers and installers alike treat rounding to a standard size as normal practice rather than a compromise.
Example 1: a standard 20-foot residential pole, 2:3 ratio
A 20-foot pole is one of the most common residential heights sold. At the default 2:3 ratio, the calculator recommends a fly of exactly 5 feet, with a matching hoist of 3.33 feet, and the acceptable band running from 5 feet up to 6.67 feet. Five feet also happens to be a standard off-the-shelf fly length, so this is the rare case where the raw recommendation and the nearest available size are identical — no rounding needed at all.
Example 2: the same 20-foot pole, but 1:2 ratio
Keep the pole height fixed at 20 feet and swap only the ratio to 1:2, and something worth noticing happens: the recommended fly is still exactly 5 feet, because the quarter-of-pole-height rule that sets the fly depends only on pole height, not on ratio. What changes is the hoist — at 1:2 it drops to 2.5 feet, noticeably shorter than the 3.33-foot hoist a 2:3 flag needs at the same fly length. The lesson: pole height decides the fly first, and only then does the ratio decide how tall (or short) the matching flag needs to be. Two flags with an identical fly length can look quite different in outline depending on which ratio produced that fly.
Example 3: a 35-foot pole, 3:5 ratio — where rounding goes down
A 35-foot pole at a 3:5 ratio recommends an 8.75-foot fly, with a matching 5.25-foot hoist. Our standard-sizes list includes both 8 feet and 10 feet as common off-the-shelf options, and 8.75 sits closer to 8 (a difference of 0.75) than to 10 (a difference of 1.25) — so the calculator’s nearest-standard-size result rounds down to 8 feet, not up. It is easy to assume rounding to a “nearest size” always means rounding up to the next size available, but the math is a plain nearest-neighbour comparison, and it will round down whenever the calculated figure happens to sit closer to the smaller stocked size.
Example 4: a 45-foot pole, 2:3 ratio — where rounding goes up
A taller, more commercial-scale 45-foot pole at the default 2:3 ratio recommends an 11.25-foot fly. Here the nearest standard sizes bracketing it are 10 feet and 12 feet, and 11.25 sits closer to 12 (0.75 away) than to 10 (1.25 away), so this time the recommendation rounds up. Side by side, examples 3 and 4 make the same point from opposite directions: the nearest-size step is a straightforward distance comparison against whatever sizes are actually stocked, not a rule that always favours a particular direction.
Example 5: a short 15-foot pole, 1:1 square ratio
A shorter 15-foot pole with a square 1:1 flag recommends a 3.75-foot fly — and because the ratio is 1:1, the hoist matches it exactly. The nearest standard size here is 4 feet, a quarter-foot up from the raw recommendation. This example also sits close to the edge of where the quarter-to-third rule stops applying comfortably at all: our guide to flag sizing notes that very short, wall-mounted bracket poles (typically 5 to 6 feet) fall well below where the rule produces a sensible result, defaulting instead to a standard size regardless of the math. Fifteen feet is tall enough that the rule still works fine, but it is a useful reminder of where the lower boundary of “the rule applies cleanly” actually sits.
Choosing your spot inside the band: a 30-foot pole
Every example above used the recommended figure at the low end of the quarter-to-third range, but the full band matters too. At 30 feet, the calculator reports a band running from a 7.5-foot fly at the low (windy, exposed) end up to a 10-foot fly at the high (sheltered, visibility-focused) end. Both are legitimate choices for the same pole — the right one depends on your site, not on the math, which only tells you the acceptable range rather than picking a single number for you. A property in a consistently gusty location does better nearer 7.5 feet; a sheltered courtyard where the flag rarely sees strong wind can comfortably carry the full 10-foot end of the range.
Example 6: a tall 60-foot pole, 10:19 ratio
Large commercial and civic installations sometimes run considerably taller than a residential pole. At 60 feet with a 10:19 ratio, the calculator recommends a 15-foot fly — landing exactly on a standard stocked size again, with no rounding needed — and a 7.89-foot hoist, noticeably shorter than the 10-foot hoist a 2:3 flag would need at the same 15-foot fly. The 10:19 ratio’s narrower profile (very close to a clean 1:2) means it consistently produces a shorter hoist than 2:3 or 3:5 at any matching fly length, simply because more of the flag’s area is being stretched along the fly rather than the hoist.
Why the hoist comparison matters in practice
Comparing examples 2 and 6 side by side makes a genuinely practical point, not just a mathematical curiosity: at the same fly length, a narrower ratio produces a shorter hoist, which means less fabric height catching wind on the vertical axis and somewhat less strain transmitted to the header and grommets over time, even though the overall fly-driven visual footprint is unchanged. It is a second, smaller lever alongside fabric weight (covered in our sizing guide) for reducing wear in an exposed location without simply buying a smaller flag outright — changing the ratio changes the hoist even when the fly, and therefore the flag’s visibility from a distance, stays exactly the same.
Example 7: a 25-foot pole, 3:5 ratio
One more common combination for good measure: a 25-foot pole at 3:5 recommends a 6.25-foot fly and a 3.75-foot hoist, rounding to a standard 6-foot fly (6.25 sits closer to 6 than to the next size up at 8). Stack this next to example 1’s 20-foot/2:3 result and example 4’s 45-foot/2:3 result, and the underlying linearity is obvious: every dimension simply scales with pole height once the ratio is fixed, exactly as the arithmetic behind the calculator says it should, and nothing about a taller or shorter pole changes the shape of the flag it recommends — only its absolute size, exactly the same distinction that a flag's ratio makes for its own outer proportions regardless of how large or small the finished flag turns out to be.
The pattern across all seven
Run enough combinations and the underlying arithmetic becomes intuitive rather than mysterious: the fly recommendation always comes from pole height alone (a quarter of it, at the low end of the band), the hoist always comes from applying your chosen ratio to that fly, and the “nearest standard size” step is always a plain distance comparison against whichever off-the-shelf sizes bracket your calculated figure — sometimes rounding up, sometimes down, with no bias either way. Once those three steps are separated out, sizing a flag for any pole height and ratio combination is the same three-step calculation every time, whether you run it by hand or let the calculator do it instantly.
A short checklist before you order
- Confirm your pole’s rated (exposed) height, not the total shaft length including the buried anchor section — the two are commonly a foot or two apart on an in-ground pole.
- Pick a ratio before you calculate a hoist, since, as example 2 showed, the same fly length needs a different hoist depending on the ratio you fly.
- Check both neighbouring standard sizes, not just the one that seems obviously closer, since a recommendation can round in either direction depending on exactly where it falls between two stocked sizes.
- Bias toward the low end of the range in an exposed spot, and only toward the high end in a sheltered one where visibility matters more than durability.
